Stay with a Local Company
Should you have a problem after the fact, a local company is always quicker to respond.
Be Careful of Franchises
Franchises are popping up left and right and when they enter a new area, they just grab whomever they can find to do their installs.
Find Medium-sized Companies
Medium sized companies with excellent reputations have better responsiveness, communication, and lower overhead. They also tend to have better buying power and higher certification levels to offer better warranties. On the other hand, very small companies don’t have the manpower to get the job done quickly, they don’t have access to better warranties, or the buying power to get their costs down. Very large companies, on the other hand, tend to have very high overhead with teams of salespeople pushing homeowners to buy at much higher costs.
Check CSL Licenses
In Massachusetts, you can search for Construction Supervisor Licenses (CSL) online.
Check for Valid HIC Registration
Contractors must be registered with the state of Massachusetts, verify Home Improvement Contractor registration online.
Are they Insured?
Both General Liability and Worker’s Compensation are required.
Are Permits Required?
Yes! It is up to the contractor to pull it. If any company tells you a permit is not required or they ask you to pull it for them, this should raise a red flag! Either they are not licensed or insured!
Meet Face to Face
So you know whom you are dealing with and get a written proposal (not written on a napkin).
Is the Proposal Detailed?
If the proposal isn’t thoroughly detailed, do you really know what you are getting?
Ask for References
Always ask for references if they are not given to you.
Do They Have a Safety Plan in Place?

Which Brand and Shingle to Use
Consider looking at Consumer Reports. You will find that the Owens Corning TruDefinition shingle continues to be the #1 rated shingle in the Nation, and that says something. Many manufacturers offer kickbacks to contractors if they install their shingles, so why are companies installing brands that are poorly rated at a much lower price point? You do get what you pay for.
Replace or Repair
While small repairs may buy you time, it will usually cost you more in the long run if you have to keep having them done. If your shingles are degrading and are past the point of no return, repairing your roof is wasting your money!
Skylights
It’s always better and less expensive to replace your existing skylights while the roof is open. It will cost you more after the fact if the skylight fails and the roof must be opened just for a single skylight.
Roofing with Siding
If you are having both done at the same time, the roof should always be done first and, in a perfect world, the same contractor should handle the flashing integration.

We had DelPrete replace our 30 y/o Windows, Clapboard and Cedar Shingles. I cant say enough good things about the whole process. Although this past winter pushed back our start date, once the job was started I could not believe how quickly … More and efficiently Estuardo's crew worked. From 7AM to 6:30 PM 6 days a week, they all went about their business and did a thorough clean up at days end. Dave was always available to answer any questions we had during the project. Five star experience all round!The communication from the sales and project management teams was first class throughout including the job scope, advanced prep requirements and on-site ETAs.Pre and post job inspections allowed as much time … More as necessary to provide clarity on the existing structural conditions and explain the various aspects of the completed work.The roofing crew arrived on time, were very courteous and presentable, were mindful of the flora, did a great job with the install and clean-up and completed the job in a day as promised.Everything above also applied to Part two of this project which was to replace all of the exterior cedar shingles and wood plank with Hardie fiber cement and trim with a couple of new windows also installed in the garage.Like Derek beforehand Project Managers Jimmy and Dave were exemplary throughout along with Estuardo leading an equally hardworking, courteous, presentable and conscientious crew.Once again this project was completed on time with exceptional communicationthroughout from Jimmy and Dave.There were some minor post-job aesthetics that were identified by both parties (which was very reassuring) but again nothing was too much trouble for them and Estuardo to diligently attend to in a concerted effort to ensure that we, as the homeowners, were left totally happy with the end result.
